Subterranean Greenhouse

Yavapai County, AZ

At Rancho Almasomos, the subterranean greenhouse is tucked behind the hills into a corner of the site that is perfectly aligned with the sun. It will be an experimental greenhouse for growing high desert species uses the powerful balance between solar radiation and geothermal insulation. Tapered hemp block walls form the structural support to the north, harnessing hemp’s breathability and carbon sequestration while tapering to reduce embodied material. The timber canopy will rest on the hemp block and hover above cobb walls that hold the earth back at a natural angle of repose.

Size: 700 ft²

Our approach is to create a natural but stable growing environment that can temper the seasonal extremes. This approach merges architecture and geology and thermodynamics into a single simple form that is both ancient and contemporary.
