Specific Gravity is a series of drawings that were commissioned by the 2025 Venice Biennale, a bi-annual exhibition of architectural theory, design, art, and ideas from around the world. For Mattaforma, Specific Gravity was an initial exploration into wood's relationship to water and vice versa. The term is a measurement that describes how much water is in wood, determining its future as a building material. Water volume determines how much energy is expended on commodifying the wood, whether it will dry out easily, store carbon, or allow dowels to swell into place. In name and nature, Specific Gravity infers the urgent need for both fluidity and precision in design today.
